Gospel Synergy

The Book Bash is a 5 minute feature that airs at various times throughout the week.
If you heard about a new book that caught your interest but didn't catch all the details,
below are the scripts of the most recent programs.

New Program Content Beginning August 28, 2010

Maybe they told you this when you were a new Christian:  “read the book of John.”  And maybe you did.  But have you ever really drilled into the Gospel of John?  Well our first featured book on the Book Bash will help you do that.  It’s:

“John:  Getting to Know the Living Savior”
by Warren Wiersbe
published by David C. Cook
Dr. Wiersbe has written in-depth commentaries on the book of John, and this is a companion to those commentaries, meant to help you really dig in and study the Gospel of John.  Dive into the word with this new edition from The Wiersbe Bible Study Series, “John: Getting to Know the Living Savior.”

(music transition)

What happens when we die?  What is heaven really like?  What about angels?  Are there any tangible answers to these questions?  That’s what the authors of our next book wanted to find out, and you can learn what they discovered in this new book:

“Encountering Heaven and the Afterlife”
by James Garlow and Keith Wall
published by Bethany House
The authors collected dozens of first hand stories of near-death experiences, angelic encounters, and other startling occurrences that give us a look into the next life, as well as the spiritual world that surrounds us right now.  Subtitled “True Stories from People Who Have Glimpsed the World Beyond,” don’t miss “Encountering Heaven and the Afterlife” by James Garlow and Keith Wall.

(music transition)

Edward and Bella – do those names ring a bell?  If not, then you probably aren’t one of the millions of people following the Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer.  Well it’s a love story with vampires, and its popularity has blazed from best selling books to blockbuster movies.  The story is making deep inroads into the culture, and maybe we should take a good close look at it from a Christian perspective…and that leads us to our next book entitled:

“Touched by a Vampire”
by Beth Felker Jones”
published by Multnomah
If you are a fan you might be asking, “What’s wrong with the Twilight books?”  Well this author gives you things to think about, such as the allure of dangerous romance, Edward becoming the center of Bella’s life, and what about this idea of imprinting?  I think this book would be especially helpful for parents whose children have already read the books, or for anyone who would like to see the bigger picture of Twilight.  This book again is “Touched by a Vampire” by Beth Felker Jones.

(music transition)

Speaking of blockbuster movies, what about the one that said the world was going to end in the year 2012?  Something about the ancient Mayans and calendar cycles and it all leads to doomsday in 2012.  The internet is full of speculation, but how does this look from a biblical perspective?  That’s where our next book comes in:

“2012, the Bible and the End of the World”
by Mark Hitchcock
published by Harvest House
The author has already written 20 books about end time Bible prophecy, and here he applies that knowledge and adds to it his in-depth research about the Mayans and history and everything that leads up to the so-called fatal date of 12/12/12.  Find out more in the book: “2012, the Bible and the End of the World” by Mark Hitchcock.

(music transition)

What kind of music do your kids listen to?  What kind of music do you LET your kids listen to?  Is it a big deal?  Is it worth starting World War III?  Or is there a way to handle this situation that is both righteous and peaceful?  Well now there is a book that will help you navigate these infested waters.  It’s called:

“Infinite Playlists”
by Todd Stocker
published by Kregel
The author starts by acknowledging music as a gift from God, then goes into the effects of music.  He teaches on music genres, then gives helpful advice on how to talk to your kids about music.  Oh, and he covers some legal issues as well, which you may not even be aware of.  So don’t miss this book on talking to your children about music.  It’s called, “Infinite Playlists” by Todd Stocker.

And that’s it for another edition of the Book Bash.  You can see all the books we’ve reviewed on our website, Wave94.com.

I’ll leave you with this quote from W.E. Channing who said, “God be thanked for books! they are the voices of the distant and the dead, and make us heirs of the spiritual life of past ages.”

New Program Content Beginning July 16, 2010

Well-known Mormons like Glenn Beck and Mitt Romney are putting a new face on Mormonism and the Latter Day Saints, and Mormons are shifting with the times.  So is the Mormon church like any other church?  No, according the author of this new book entitled:

“The Mormon Mirage”
by Latayne Scott
published by Zondervan
The author says she was a happy and faithful Mormon for ten years, attending Brigham Young University and working on their weekly magazines.  Then she began to examine the doctrines and practices of the Mormons and uncovered many problems and errors.  This is the third edition of the book, updated to reflect the Mormon Church today.  The book again is “The Mormon Mirage” by Latayne Scott.

(music transition)

So that’s the Mormons, what about Jehovah’s Witnesses?  Are they just like every other church on the corner?  No, says the author of our next book entitled:

“Reasoning from the Scriptures with the Jehovah’s Witnesses”
by Ron Rhodes
published by Harvest House
So a Jehovah’s Witness shows up at your door.  What do you say when they quote from their New World Translation of the Bible and hand you a Watchtower?  This book will tell you exactly what to say.  It, too, is an updated version of the previous best seller, so don’t miss “Reasoning from the Scriptures with the Jehovah’s Witnesses” by Ron Rhodes.

(music transition)

“Doug, I don’t have time to worry about Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses.  I’m too busy just trying to feed the kids and keep the lights on.”  Okay, well our next two books can help.  The first is titled:

“Making the Most of Your Money in Tough Times”
by Kerby Anderson
published by Harvest House
This is not just a book about money, but it’s about money from a Biblical perspective – with advice about getting out of debt, saving & spending, borrowing and investing, and being a good steward of what God has blessed you with.  That’s “Making the Most of Your Money in Tough Times” by Kerby Anderson.

(music transition)

Our second book about finances comes from an award winning national columnist for the Washington Post.  The book is:

“The Power to Prosper:  21 Days to Financial Freedom”
by Michelle Singletary
published by Zondervan
She says Americans are involved in a bad relationship, and it’s time to break up….with spending.  She says you can break your overspending habit, your bondage to debt, and your spousal disagreements about money.  Find out more with this new book, “The Power to Prosper:  21 Days to Financial Freedom” by Michelle Singletary.

(music transition)

Speaking of spouses, how are things going in your marriage?  If things could be better, here is a great new book that will help.  It’s called:

“He Said.  She Said.”
by Jay and Laura Laffoon
published by BakerBooks
So much of a marriage’s quality comes down to the words spouses say to one another.  By taking control of your words, you can greatly improve the quality of your marriage.  The Laffoons build on 8 simple phrases that, when used properly, will guarantee a healthy marriage.  Pick up your own copy today of “He Said.  She Said.” by Jay and Laura Laffoon.

(music transition)

Our next new book is a stunning true story of hope pulled from the ashes.  It’s called:

“Life In Spite of Me”
by Kristen Jane Anderson
published by Multnomah
The author’s life was fine until four people close to her died within two years, rocking her world.  Then she was raped by a friend and went spiraling into a depression.  At only 17 years old she decided to take her life by laying down on a railroad track.  But somehow, she survived, and this is the story of the life-transforming power of hope in Christ.  Don’t miss “Life In Spite of Me” by Kristen Jane Anderson.

(music transition)

And finally, here’s a great new work of Christian fiction.  It’s:

“Take Four”
by Karen Kingsbury
published by Zondervan
…a story of hope, heartbreak, and the search for happy endings.

And that’s it for another edition of the Book Bash.  You can see all the books we’ve reviewed on our website, Wave94.com.

I’ll leave you with this quote from Holbrook Jackson who said, “The time to read is any time.”

New Program Content Beginning May 14, 2010

Our first book on the show today is co-authored by a New York Times best-selling author and an international expert on Arab-American relations.  The book is:

“Tea With Hezbollah”
by Ted Dekker and Carl Medearis
published by Doubleday
The authors actually went to the Middle East, to Egypt and Saudi Arabia, Beirut, Damascus and ended up in Jerusalem.  Their journey was fascinating and sometime terrifying.  They met with leaders of Hezbollah and Hamas, with brothers of Osama bin Laden, and came to the conclusion that Christ-fueled love is possible and really can change the world, and even impact the relationship between Christians and Muslims.  The subtitle of the book is “Sitting at the Enemies’ Table, Our Journey Through the Middle East.”  The book again is “Tea With Hezbollah” by Ted Dekker and Carl Medearis.

(music transition)

Next we feature a new book by the author known for writing “I Kissed Dating Goodbye.”  I’m talking about:

“Dug Down Deep”
by Joshua Harris
published by Multnomah
After writing the dating book, Harris quickly rose in the Christian ranks.  Now he is a husband and a father and a senior pastor – and this book is about something he discovered along the way – the immense value of such seemingly outdated notions as theology, orthodoxy and doctrine.  Find out how he took his faith to a new level in the book “Dug Down Deep” by Joshua Harris.

(music transition)

Speaking about going beyond the superficial in our faith, here is a book that church leaders should be especially interested in.  It’s called:

“Grounded in the Gospel”
by J.I. Packer and Gary Parrett
published by BakerBooks
What is your church doing to ground new believers in the deep theology of the Christian faith?  Do you have extensive discipleship classes, or even catechism?  We must move believers along the spectrum from superficial to more and more mature and grounded.  This book will tell you what it’s all about, and like I said, church leaders especially need to consider what this book is saying.  That’s “Grounded in the Gospel” by J.I. Packer and Gary Parrett.

(music transition)

Father’s Day is when all the attention turns to dad, but here is a new book that is appropriate all year long.  It’s called:

“52 Things Kids Need From a Dad”
by Jay Payleitner
published by Harvest House
This book covers such things as not freaking out about spilled milk, but that it’s okay to freak out a little when they lose your socket wrench.  Dads need to set some ironclad family rules.  Dads need to love their kids’ mom, and they need to set the bar pretty high.  If you want a Dad book that’s easy to read, yet will dramatically improve your fathering with easy and practical tips, here it is.  “52 Things Kids Need From a Dad” by Jay Payleitner.

(music transition)

Next we have a book for both fathers and mothers…of teenage boys.  Really, if you have a teenage son, do you ever wonder what on earth is going through his head sometimes?  Well this book is designed to clue you in.  It’s:

“What Your Son Isn’t Telling You”
by Michael Ross and Susie Shellenberger
published by Bethany House
The authors are known for editing Focus on the Family’s popular teen magazines Breakaway and Brio.  The book is full of real life stories from teen guys covering things they struggle with, what’s important to them, and how much they need their parents even though they may never ask for help.  A must read for parents of teen sons, it’s “What Your Son Isn’t Telling You” by Michael Ross and Susie Shellenberger.

(music transition)

And we close with our featured Christian fiction, and this week it’s:

“The Last Christian”
by David Gregory
published by WaterBrook
What would the future look like in a world of vast technology…and no faith?  Find out in this hot new novel “The Last Christian” by David Gregory.

And that’s it for another edition of the Book Bash.  You can see all the books we’ve reviewed on our website, Wave94.com.

I’ll leave you with this quote from Abraham Lincoln who said, “The things I want to know are in books.”

New Program Content Beginning April 24, 2010

On Wave 94 you’ve probably heard our “Prayers for the Nations.”  Years ago we used to play a prayer program by a man named Dick Eastman.  Well now there is a new book out about what God is doing around the world.  It’s called:

“Look What God Is Doing!”
by Dick Eastman
published by Chosen
Dick Eastman has traveled the globe 50 times over and he has returned with stories, true stories, from the jungles of Brazil to the foothills of the Himalayas.  So often we only see what is going on around us, or what we see on the cable news networks.  But here is a book full of stories of people around the world who have been changed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Don’t miss the adventures in “Look What God Is Doing!” by Dick Eastman.

(music transition)

Now let’s look at a new book about what God did back in the 18th century.  It’s all in this new biography entitled:

“George Whitefield”
by Arnold Dallimore
published by Crossway
If you are really new to Whitefield, then you might mispronounce his name because it looks like WHITE-field, but anyway, George Whitefield was known for his part in the Great Revival and his great compassion on the poor.  This is actually a much shorter version of a giant two volume set that the author originally produced, but it’s now much more accessible to the average reader, so don’t miss this biography of a great Christian, “George Whitefield” by Arnold Dallimore.

(music transition)

David Crowder has visited Tallahassee a few times, and what a unique character!  Well now he has a new book out along with a bandmate.  The book is:

“Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven But Nobody Wants to Die”
by David Crowder and Mike Hogan
published by Zondervan
Crowder says, “This book is a meditation on grief and the soul.”  Sounds heavy, I know.  And it comes from the authors’ grief after their pastor was tragically electrocuted while baptizing a member of their church.  Yes, it’s a sobering topic, but don’t discount Crowder’s quirky and upbeat personality.  The book is “Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven But Nobody Wants to Die” by David Crowder and Mike Hogan.

(music transition)

So…have you ever encountered an atheist?  Someone who doesn’t believe in god and makes a grand case for why you shouldn’t either?  Maybe you didn’t know what to say.  Maybe they were able to rock your own faith with good, hard questions.  Well now there is a book you can turn to written with skeptics and atheists in mind.  It’s called:

“I Don’t Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist”
by Norman Geisler and Frank Turek
published by Crossway
Now listen to the list of people endorsing this book:  Josh McDowell, Hank Hanegraaff, Lee Strobel, Cal Thomas, Phillip Johnson and David Limbaugh, among others.  If you want to read a systematic and logical discussion of Christianity and why it is rationally true, then pick up “I Don’t Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist” by Norman Geisler and Frank Turek.

(music transition)

I use Warren Wiersbe as a source quite often in my own Bible studies, and now he has a couple of new books out.  The first is a new volume in The Wiersbe Bible Study Series:

“It’s Always Too Soon to Quit”
a study of First and Second Timothy, Titus and Philemon
by Warren Wiersbe
published by David C. Cook
The second is also an in-depth study as you would expect from this author, but written in a regular book form.  It’s called:

“On Earth As It Is In Heaven”
by Warren Wiersbe
published by Baker Books
In this book we discover how the Lord’s Prayer teaches us to pray more effectively.  Do you feel like your prayer life is stagnant?  Are you saying the same basic you prayers you prayed when you first started praying?  Well it’s time to grow into a more developed, mature prayer life, and this book will help.  It’s “On Earth As It Is In Heaven” by Warren Wiersbe.

And that’s it for another edition of the Book Bash.  You can see all the books we’ve reviewed on our website, Wave94.com.

I’ll leave you with this quote from Austin Phelps who said, “Wear the old coat and buy the new book.”

New Program Content Beginning April 14, 2010

Let’s start with two new books about marriage.  The first one is entitled:

“The Marriage Miracle”
by Bob and Cheryl Moeller
published by Harvest House
In this book the Moellers tackle three tough questions.  Why do the hearts of husbands and wives grow hard?  How can couples soften their hardened hearts?  And how can they keep their hearts soft toward each other?  One thing they point out is that we often cannot even see the hardness of our own heart.  They say if your marriage is in “v-fib” this book will help.  “The Marriage Miracle” by Bob and Cheryl Moeller.

(music transition)

Our second new book about marriage has a more sobering title, which is simply this:

“Unfaithful”
by Gary and Mona Shriver
published by David C. Cook
The subtitle is “hope and healing after infidelity,” and that’s just what the authors experienced in their own life.  They were active Christians, yet something went very wrong in their marriage.  How did it happen?  How did they get through it and come out strong on the other side?  Well it is possible, and this couple will guide you through it as they share their own story.  The book is “Unfaithful” by Gary and Mona Shriver.

(music transition)

Our next book isn’t about marriage specifically, but it’s a topic that married people will certainly be interested in, along with most everyone else.  And it’s not exactly a new book.  In fact there are already over two million copies in print, but this is an updated edition.  The book’s title is:

“How to Win Over Worry”
by John Edmund Haggai
published by Harvest House
Here is a line from the book I found intriguing.  It says, “I can remember exactly when I stopped worrying.”  How many of us can say that?  And no, it wasn’t when he finally took a trip down Easy Street.  He still had plenty of life’s pressures, but he learned the secret of living without worrying, and he shares it with the rest of us in this new, 50th anniversary edition of “How to Win Over Worry” by John Edmund Haggai.

(music transition)

Next we have a book that all will find challenging, and some will find controversial. It’s called:

“Good Game”
by Shirl James Hoffman
published by Baylor Press
The subtitle is “Christianity and the Culture of Sports.”  The author says it’s time for Christians to take a good hard look at sports and its influence on the church.  What about competition?  What about the violence in sports?  What about the worldly influence of sports broadcasts?  What about showing the Super Bowl right there in church?  Maybe it’s time to take a deeper look instead of accepting everything our culture dishes out at face value.  This book will really get you thinking.  It’s called, “Good Game: Christianity and the Culture of Sports” by Shirl James Hoffman.

(music transition)

And finally we have three books whose titles pretty much tell you what you need to know.  The first one is:

“Homeschooling for the Rest of Us”
by Sonya Haskins
published by Bethany House
If you think homeschooling is only for some perfect families out there, well here is a book that will help you put homeschooling into a realistic perspective that will work for all kinds of less than perfect families.

And these last two books, well, you’ll find out plenty about them when I simply tell you the titles.  Any more than that would just be more than I’m ready to share on this little book review show.  The first one is:

“The Menopause Guide”
by Danna Demetre
published by Spire
And the second one is:

“A Chicken’s Guide to Talking Turkey With Your Kids About Sex”
by Dr. Kevin Leman
published by Zondervan

And that’s it for another edition of the Book Bash.  You can see all the books we’ve reviewed on our website, Wave94.com.

I’ll leave you with this quote from Forsyth and Rada, “Many people, other than the authors, contribute to the making of a book, from the first person who had the bright idea of alphabetic writing through the inventor of movable type to the lumberjacks who felled the trees that were pulped for its printing.  It is not customary to acknowledge the trees themselves, though their commitment is total.”

New Program Content Beginning February 5, 2010

As Christians, very few of us are pastors, and the vast majority of us are not pastors.  Yes, pastors get to stand up in front of us every week and talk, but there are some things they never share opening about.  However, there are things they would like us to know as members of their church.  And that’s where this new book comes in.  It’s called:

“What Pastors Wish Church Members Knew”
by Denise George
published by Zondervan
If pastors were given the opportunity to share openly and anonymously, what would they say?  Well this book gave them the opportunity to do just that.  You’ll find out what pastors said about their personal lives, about their church, and how they fit into the world at large.  Chapter titles include, “Ministry has taken a toll on me,” and “Sometimes I’m overwhelmed with anxiety,” and “Preaching to you is the hardest thing I do.”  This is a book that pastors wish you would read, so do them a favor and read it.  The book again is, “What Pastors Wish Church Members Knew” by Denise George.

(music transition)

Now here is an author that most pastors have probably studied, and he is known for his Bible commentaries.  And if you are a serious student of Scriptures, you should probably check into his works, including this next one entitled:

“Be Authentic” a commentary on Genesis 25 thru 50
by Warren Wiersbe
published by David C. Cook
This is primarily a study of three Old Testament character, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph.  Sure, you might be familiar with their stories, so now it’s time to study them a little deeper, and this is just the author and Bible teacher to take you there.  It’s called “Be Authentic” the commentary on Genesis 25 thru 50 by Warren Wiersbe.

(music transition)

Are you interested in history and people in history?  Then you will probably like the next two books I have for you on the Book Bash.  The first one is simply entitled:

“Church History”
by Christopher Catherwood
published by Crossway
The subtitle is “A Crash Course for the Curious.”  You may be a student of the Bible, but how much do you know about the church starting from where the New Testament ends?  Much of church history affects us today, so it’s good to know what’s happened in the church over the last couple of thousand years.  Like I said, it’s a crash course, so if you’d just like to stick your toes into church history and see if it’s worth going any deeper, this book is for you.  It’s simply titled, “Church History” by Christopher Catherwood.

(music transition)

Now here’s a book about one specific figure in church history, a man who has definitely influenced Christian thinking from his day to our day.  The book is called:

“John Calvin:  Pilgrim and Pastor”
by W. Robert Godfrey
published by Crossway
Gee, both of our history books were published by Crossway.  Anyway, last year we celebrated the 500th anniversary of the birth of John Calvin, which spurred the release of this new biography.  It covers his young life in Strassburg and his first ministry in Geneva, and yes it includes his beliefs on worship and the sacraments and predestination.  The book again is “John Calvin:  Pilgrim and Pastor” by W. Robert Godfrey.

(music transition)

Next we have a book by one of the most well known pastors of our day, and it’s about a subject that is always intriguing.  The book’s title is:

“Angels”
by Dr. David Jeremiah
published by Multnomah
There are many popular misconceptions about angels, and if you watch a lot of TV and movies, you may have no idea what the Bible actually says on the subject.  Well Dr. Jeremiah will really clear things up for you with his down to earth style and his deep biblical understanding.  That’s “Angels” by Dr. David Jeremiah.

(music transition)

And that’s it for another edition of the Book Bash.  You can see all the books we’ve reviewed on our website, Wave94.com.

I’ll leave you with this quote from G.K. Chesterton who said, “There is a great deal of difference between an eager man who wants to read a book and a tired man who wants to read a book.”

New Program Content Beginning January 8, 2010

An old saying says, “Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”  Well not all history is bad, and some of it we might want to repeat.  And in addition to world history and political history, we need to learn some lessons from church history.  Have you ever studied church history?  Would you even know where to begin, short of going to seminary?  Well, here is where you can begin, with book one in a series covering church history.  In fact, it’s called:

“Church History, Volume One, From Christ to Pre-Reformation”
by Everett Ferguson
published by Zondervan
Take chapter five.  It’s entitled Heresies and Schisms in the Second Century.  How did the early church deal with such things?  How did Christianity survive at all, in spite of all the persecution?  Find out that and more by picking up your own copy of “Church History, Volume One” by Everett Ferguson.

(music transition)

I read the other day that Facebook was now the most viewed website, far ahead of all the others and receiving hundreds of billions of views.  Well something that huge is bound to have an impact on the culture, isn’t it?  Well now there are two new books to help us sort it all out.  The first one is entitled:

“Thy Kingdom Connected”
by Dwight J. Friesen
published by BakerBooks
What can the church learn from Facebook, the internet, and other networks?  What do we need to understand about this phenomenon?  Find out in “Thy Kingdom Connected” by Dwight J. Friesen.

And now here’s another book along the same lines:

“The Church of Facebook”
by Jesse Rice
published by David C. Cook
The author says the online social networking craze shows that we all long to be connected and to be known, to be part of a community.  It’s a need to belong, and isn’t this where the church can come in?  This is something every church leader needs to be studying, and here is a book that can get you started.  “The Church of Facebook” by Jesse Rice.

(music transition)

Maybe being connected online isn’t your problem.  Maybe just being connected to your spouse is where you need some help.  Well I have just the book for you.  It is simply entitled:

“Closer”
Jim and Cathy Burns
published by Bethany House
This is a book of 52 weekly devotionals.  Yes, in just 30 minutes a week you can have a better marriage.  The topics include “Too Busy,” “No Regrets,” and “Strategic Romance.”  That and more in the new marriage devotional book, “Closer,” by Jim and Cathy Burns.

(music transition)

While we are talking about marriage, let’s just go ahead and talk about another new marriage book called:

“Kiss Me Again”
by Barbara Wilson
published by Multnomah
Has the passion died down in your marriage?  Did you know there may be scientific, as well as spiritual reasons for that?  Did you ever think about the effect of past intimacies on your marriage?  Well this author has it down to a science, and she is her own living proof, as you can read for yourself in the book “Kiss Me Again” by Barbara Wilson.

(music transition)

Now how about some faith-based fiction?  Our first novel is:

“So Not Happening”
by Jenny B. Jones
published by Thomas Nelson
What happens when a New York girl with money ends up being forced to move to Oklahoma, to a farm no less!  Well that’s what happens to Bella Kirkwood.  But then she becomes a reporter and begins to smell something rotten in that little Oklahoma town.  Find out what happens in So Not Happening by Jenny B. Jones.

(music transition)

If that sounds a little too “light” for your fiction tastes, then try this on for size.  It’s a book called:

“Double Cross”
by James David Jordan
published by Broadman and Holman
The book is about a former Secret Service agent, a woman named Taylor Pasbury.  And the book begins with this line, “The day my mother came back into my life began with a low December fog and a suicide.”  It’s a book full of action when the top assistant of a famous televangelist turns up dead.  If you like thrillers, don’t miss this faith-based novel, “Double Cross” by James David Jordan.

And that’s it for another edition of the Book Bash.  You can see all the books we’ve reviewed on our website, Wave94.com.

I’ll leave you with this quote from Holbrook Jackson who said, “The time to read is…anytime!”

New Program Content Beginning November 6, 2009

We start this edition of the Book Bash with a couple of new bibles from Zondervan.  The first one is called:

“True Identity:  The Bible for Women”
published by Zondervan
It features the complete Bible in Today’s NIV, plus it’s also full of articles and helps especially for women.  For example, there are 100 exposes on the myths the world tells women, and 200 conversation notes to help women reflect on the Word, and a lot more.  In fact, this Bible is chock-full of helpful articles for females.  Again, it’s “True Identity:  The Bible for Women” published by Zondervan.

And the second bible I mentioned is especially for anyone who loves horses.  Not that it’s full of articles about horses, but it does have a lot of beautiful horse photos, plus a soft tan cover with a horse emblazoned on the cover – and it’s simply called the:

“Wild About Horses Bible”
published by Zondervan

(music transition)

That horses bible would make a great gift for your daughter, and while she’s on your mind you might think seriously about picking up this next book entitled:

“Raising a Spiritually Strong Daughter”
by Susie Shellenberger
published by Bethany House
This is a book specifically for Christian mothers who want to pass their faith along to their daughters.  It’s full of advice, as you would expect, but then there’s a neat special section at the end.  It’s an in-depth bible study designed especially for mothers and daughters to do together.  The book again is “Raising a Spiritually Strong Daughter” by Susie Shellenberger.

(music transition)

Well, to keep this show balanced, it’s time for a book for men, and it’s by an author who’s known for getting men fired up.  The book is called:

“Battle Ready”
by Steve Farrar
published by David C. Cook
The author says that these are times that try men’s souls.  With economic pressures and spiritual pressures and family pressures, men are under fire in America.  If you are one of those men, do yourself a favor and pick up this book which focuses on Joshua and Caleb, plus great real life stories from today of what God can do in a man that is prepared to be used by God.  The book again is “Battle Ready” by Steve Farrar.

Now if you think you are a man under a lot of pressure, well what about President Abraham Lincoln?  Now there was a man who stood up under tremendous weight while leading the nation through the Civil War.  And he was a man who turned to God for strength.  And now there is a new book which takes a close look at the spiritual strength of our 16th president.  The book is entitled:

“Walking With Lincoln”
by Thomas Freiling
published by Revell

(music transition)

Now here is a topic that you might think applies more to men, but when you think about it you’ll see it applies to everyone.  The book is called:

“Keeping Your Cool…When Your Anger is Hot!”
by June Hunt
published by Harvest House
The author says that God designed anger to help us, not hurt us.  It’s the mishandling of anger that causes so much trouble.  This book will help you identify the true sources of your anger, the things that trigger your anger, and will teach you how to deal with buried anger.  That’s “Keeping Your Cool…When Your Anger is Hot!” by June Hunt.

And now let’s turn from emotions to reason.  Have you ever heard anyone say that Christianity is incompatible with reason?  That when you apply logic to our faith, our faith just doesn’t measure up?  Well here is a book that will help you.  It’s entitled:

“Defending Your Faith”
by R.C. Sproul
published by Crossway
This is an introduction to apologetics, and if you don’t know what that is, that’s okay, this book will teach you.  Does God exist?  Is the Bible the Word of God?  Do you have to strictly take those by blind faith, or can you apply your mind and logic and reason?  Let the author show you how faith and reason can go hand in hand in this new book, “Defending Your Faith” by R.C. Sproul.

And that’s it for another edition of the Book Bash.  You can see all the books we’ve reviewed on our website, Wave94.com.

I’ll leave you with this quote from Mortimer Adler who said, “In the case of good books, the point is not how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through to you.”

New Program Content Beginning October 30, 2009

The authors of our first book today on the Book Bash say that basic knowledge of our nation’s history is eroding at an alarming rate.  Too many young people know too little about how our nation came to be and what it stands for.  With that in mind, they have released a comprehensive three-volume set that covers our nation’s foundations, without leaving out the Christian parts!  The first book is called:

“The Light and the Glory”
by Peter Marshall and David Manuel
published by Revell
Now you might remember “The Light and the Glory” which the authors released over 30 years ago.  Well this is a revised and expanded edition, and it covers our country’s history from 1492 through 1793.  Then comes:

“From Sea to Shining Sea”
Which is book two in the series, and covers from 1787 through 1837.  And then comes:

“Sounding Forth the Trumpet”
which covers the years 1837 through 1860.  The subtitle of this series is “God’s plan for America.”  Educate yourself and your family on the founding of our country with a history that doesn’t leave out the Lord.  Pick up this three-volume set by Peter Marshall and David Manuel.

(music transition)

While we are thinking about history, let’s take a look at a brand new release of a classic work.  It’s:

“The Pilgrim’s Progress”
by John Bunyan
published by Crossway
This is a wonderful new edition of Pilgrim’s Progress, with Bunyan’s text brought up to date by editor C.J. Lovik, and it’s full of beautiful full color illustrations by Mike Wimmer.  It also includes explanatory notes at the end so you don’t miss any of the many layers of meaning in “The Pilgrim’s Progress” by John Bunyan.

(music transition)

Now we move from one pilgrim to another.  The subtitle of our next new book is “Daily Readings with a Fellow Pilgrim.”  The book is entitled:

“Grace Notes”
by Philip Yancey
published by Zondervan
Philip Yancey has been a top selling Christian author for over 30 years now, and this book brings back highlights from all those other books and edits them down into a daily devotional format.  So there are 366 daily readings from the best of Philip Yancey, all right here in his new daily devotional called, “Grace Notes.”

(music transition)

Next we feature another top-selling Christian author who is also the host of the radio program New Life Live!  He is:

Stephen Arterburn
and his new book is:

“Regret-Free Living”
published by Bethany House
So what is regret-free living?  It’s when your past mistakes are no longer dragging you down and holding you back from living the life God has for you in the future.  Yes, it is possible!  It’s possible to break free from those unhealthy patterns.  Find out how by picking up “Regret-Free Living” by Stephen Arterburn.

(music transition)

Have you ever heard of “time-saving devices”?  Supposedly our lives are full of them, and yet where is all of our free time?  And the more children you have, the more frenzied your household can be.  Is that a good word for your family:  frenzied?  Well then here is a book for you.  It’s called:

“Not So Fast”
by Ann Kroeker
published by David C. Cook
Yes, this book talks about frenzied families and what we can do about them, but then each chapter has a special section called Live From the Slow Zone, and we get to hear from people who have actually put these slow-down principles into practice.  The book again is “Not So Fast” by Ann Kroeker.

(music transition)

Well that book talks about families, and our next book goes right to the heart of the family, and that is…your marriage.  This new book is entitled:

“The Marriage Code”
by Bill & Pam Farrell
published by Harvest House
Have you ever noticed that your spouse can be a source of joy and a source of frustration all on the same day?  Well this book will help you get in sync with your spouse, and it comes down to knowing their code, that is, the core needs they need to have met.  Long-time marriage experts Bill & Pam Farrell will help you in their latest book, “The Marriage Code.”

And that’s it for another edition of the Book Bash.  You can see all the books we’ve reviewed on our website, Wave94.com.

I’ll leave you with this quote from Emily Dickinson who said, “There is not frigate like a book to take us lands away.”

New Program Content Beginning September 11, 2009

I know some people love to hold onto their old Bibles, and I do too, but I also love to get my hands on a new Bible, and here’s one just for men.  It’s called:

“MANual:  The NIV Bible for Men”
published by Zondervan
It’s the complete NIV Bible, of course, but then it’s also full of special features with men in mind, including 50 profiles about select men in the Bible, 100 “myth” articles that debunk common myths, 300 notes on issues such as money, sex and pride, and a lot more.  “MANual:  The NIV Bible for Men” published by Zondervan.

(music transition)

Now how about a book just for women?  Here you go, this one’s called:

“10 Things You Aren’t Telling Him”
by Julie Clinton
published by Harvest House
This is a book about communicating with your man.  You might think you’re doing just fine, but he’s just not getting it.  Well ladies, this book will help you have real communication with him.  The book again is, “10 Things You Aren’t Telling Him” by Julie Clinton.

(music transition)

Now here’s a book especially for married couples.  It’s called:

“Kiss Me Like You Mean It”
by Dr. David Clarke
published by Revell
So what does it mean when that glorious, heart-pumping feeling of love and desire seems to vanish in the wake of kids and careers and life in general?  Can you get it back, that crazy in love feeling?  Dr. Clarke says yes!  Using the Song of Solomon, he will show you how to get back that honeymoon feeling.  That’s “Kiss Me Like You Mean It” by Dr. David Clarke.

(music transition)

Next up is a book that everyone needs to read.  It’s called:

“50 People Every Christian Should Know”
by Warren Wiersbe
published by BakerBooks
This is a book full of short biographies of some of the most inspiring Christians, people like Jonathan Edwards, Fanny Crosby, Hudson Taylor, Charles Spurgeon, Dwight Moody, R.A. Torrey and Oswald Chambers.  It’s like a Christian Hall of Fame, full of stories that will inspire you and your children to rise to the challenge.  The book again is, “50 People Every Christian Should Know” by Warren Wiersbe.

(music transition)

Okay this next book, I’m going to admit, is over my head.  It’s over 600 pages of science – even holding it kind of makes my head spin.  But what great and necessary information!  The book is entitled:

“Signature in the Cell”
by Stephen C. Meyer
published by HarperOne
To sum it up, this book makes the case, scientifically, for intelligent design.  The author shows that the digital code embedded in DNA points to a designing intelligence and helps unravel a mystery that Charles Darwin did not address:  how did life begin?  This book is especially good for those who are more science minded – or those who insist there is no Creator!  The book is called, “Signature in the Cell” by Stephen C. Meyer.

(music transition)

Okay, maybe deep science isn’t your thing.  Maybe you would just like to read a true story of God changing people’s lives in miraculous ways.  Well this next book is just what the doctor ordered.  It’s called:

“Holy Roller”
by Julie Lyons
published by WaterBrook
The author was a crime reporter for the Dallas Times Herald.  Then she discovered a church in a rundown part of the city where people were being delivered – criminals, prostitutes, drug addicts – and even supernaturally healed.  It made the front page of the Dallas paper, and changed the author’s life.  Now you can read the entire true story in this new book, “Holy Roller” by Julie Lyons.

(music transition)

And now our new faith-based work of fiction, this one from a New York Times best-selling author.  This novel is simply entitled:

“Kiss”
by Ted Dekker, with Erin Healy
published by Thomas Nelson

It’s about Shauna, who wakes up in a hospital bed missing six months of her memory.  There’s her boyfriend she doesn’t remember, an abusive stepmother, and someone might be trying to kill her, but for what?  Here’s what an Olympic gold medalist had to say about this book.  Laura Wilkinson said it’s “A perfect 10 with romance, politics, scandals, and non-stop suspense.”  That’s what she said about this new novel entitled, “Kiss” by Ted Dekker with Erin Healy.

And that’s it for another edition of the Book Bash.  You can see all the books we’ve reviewed on our website, Wave94.com.

I’ll leave you with this quote from Garrison Keillor who said, “A book is a gift you can open again and again.”

New Program Content Beginning July 22, 2009

Let’s start our program by looking at a new book with a title sure to catch your interest:

“How to Mess Up Your Child’s Life”
by Olivia and Kurt Bruner
published by Faith Words
This book offers advice to parents by bringing it in the back door, as the title suggests.  You will find help in feeding your child’s ego, encouraging deep-seated resentment, showing them how to get even, inspiring their laziness and developing a keen sense of greed.  Then, as a bonus, they show how wise parents handle such situations.  By the way, you might have heard the authors on “Focus on the Family.”  That book title again is, “How to Mess Up Your Child’s Life” by Olivia and Kurt Bruner.

(music transition)

Speaking of parenting, our next book is the true story of someone who had a few struggles with her parents.  It’s called:

“The Girl in the Orange Dress”
by Margot Starbuck
published by InterVarsity Press
The author’s birth parents put her up for adoption.  Then her adoptive father left.  Then she was rejected by her stepfather.  Then she tried to reconnect with her birth father and was rejected.  That leads to the subtitle of the book, “Searching for a father who does not fail.”  It sounds heavy, but there is a lot of humor and lightheartedness along the way in “The Girl in the Orange Dress” by Margot Starbuck.

(music transition)

Our next book was written by a former Olympic weightlifting champion, and it’s not really novel, but it’s more like a book-length parable.  It’s called:

“The King’s Legacy”
by Jim Stovall
published by David C. Cook
It’s the story of a king in an enchanted kingdom.  Near the end of his reign he wants to leave a special legacy, but what?  He begins calling in people from all walks of life in a quest for “the wisdom of the ages,” but how will he know when he as found it?  Find out by picking up your own copy of “The King’s Legacy” by Jim Stovall.

(music transition)

Is America a Christian nation?  President Obama said it is not.  Newsweek recently announced the demise of Christian America.  Well exactly how does Christianity fit into the history of the United States?  Here is a new book that will help make sense of it all.  It’s called:

“The Book That Made America”
by Jerry Newcombe
published by Nordskog
The author has produced over 50 documentaries, and he brings that research experience to this book which is subtitled, “How the Bible formed our nation.”  Promoters of this book include Kerby Anderson, Peter J. Marshall and Ann Coulter.  It’s like a little encyclopedia of the Christian roots of this nation.  Don’t miss, “The Book That Made America” by Jerry Newcombe.

(music transition)

Here is a quote from our next featured book.  It says, “We often make outreach harder than it needs to be.  We figure we can’t do anything until we’re ready to do everything.  So instead we do nothing.”  That’s a quote from the book:

“The Unexpected Adventure”
by Lee Strobel and Mark Mittelberg
published by Zondervan
And what is this “unexpected adventure”?  It’s what happens when you talk to people about Jesus.  The book is divided into 40 segments with easy action points, all designed to get you fired up to take the spiritual risk and talk about Christ.  The book again is, “The Unexpected Adventure” by Lee Strobel and Mark Mittelberg.

(music transition)

Our next book is about friendships among women.  It’s called:

“The Friends We Keep”
by Sarah Zacharias Davis
published by WaterBrook
The author is the daughter of well-known Christian minister Ravi Zacharias, but that doesn’t mean she’s immune to trouble in friendships.  In this book she shares the struggles in some of her own friendships, as well as the surprises and the things she’s learned along the way about making strong and lasting friendships with other women.  The book is titled, “The Friends We Keep” by Sarah Zacharias Davis.

(music transition)

And now our featured new faith-based novel.  It’s called:

“Through the Fire”
by Shawn Grady
published by Bethany House
It’s about a firefighter with a special gift for reading flames, but then he gets suspended, just as an arsonist begins targeting Reno.  An interesting note, the author himself is a real firefighter in Reno.  The book again is “Through the Fire” by Shawn Grady.

And that’s it for another edition of the Book Bash.  You can see all the books we’ve reviewed on our website, Wave94.com.

I’ll leave you with this quote from Andrew Ross who said, “The smallest bookstore still contains more ideas of worth than have been presented in the entire history of television.”

New Program Content Beginning May 1, 2009

I want to start with a couple of great books by a pastor who has gone on to be with the Lord, but is still having an impact through what he wrote before he left.  The first book is entitled:

“The Real Messiah:  Prophecies Fulfilled”
by Dr. D. James Kennedy and Jerry Newcombe
published by the D. James Kennedy Foundation
I’ll never forget the thrill the first time I studied the Old Testament prophecies about Jesus.  It was fascinating to see how, one after another, Christ fulfilled what had been written centuries before.  Well this new book digs out all those prophecies for you and makes them easy to understand.  The book’s title is “The Real Messiah:  Prophecies Fulfilled” by Dr. D. James Kennedy and Jerry Newcomb.

(music transition)

Next we feature another book by the same authors.  It’s called:
